Usha Radhakrishnan

The Not-So-Typical Housewife

Yes, for all intents and purposes, Usha Radhakrishnan is a “housewife”. But that does not mean she lacks ambition, or the ability to fulfil her ambitions! The stereotypes associated with a housewife don’t apply to her... as they don’t with most women.

“Housewife” is either a designation enforced upon women by traditionalist society, or of late, a term that is frowned upon by modernist philosophy. Either way you look at it, this is a job that gets a lot of flak.

While the world debates the concept of a housewife, here is a woman who embraces it whole heartedly. Yes, for all intents and purposes, Usha Radhakrishnan is a “housewife”.

This is not to say that she lacks ambition or the aptitude to fulfil her ambitions. The stereotypes associated with a housewife don’t apply to her… as they don’t with most women.

Usha was the Editor of the well-known women’s magazine - ‘Savvy’. Incidentally, it was her “savviness” that helped contribute to the magazine’s success. After her stint here, she went on to be the Editorial Director of Explocity in Bangalore.

When a decision had to be made, however unpleasant the outcome, Usha would see it through. Her mantra? “Don’t expect others to do what you are supposed to do."

This philosophy was applicable to her personal life as well. After the birth of her children, she felt responsible for raising them to be good citizens. And so she took time out from her career to play a key role in their lives. Not because it’s said to be a mother’s duty to forego her passions in order to rear children, but because she believes that once a decision is made, which in this case was to have kids, it must be seen through.

And so, while Usha may outwardly seem to conform to the stereotypes of a woman, she is in reality, a revolutionary for her kind.
