Ruma Chakraborty

The Passionate Dancer

If there is one thing that Ruma holds sacrosanct, it is her sense of self. “The world of culture, and my understandings from the spheres of mass media have helped me gather knowledge that has defined me, and my individuality,” she says. “I would never do anything to undo these learnings.”

Striking a pose, a graceful one at that, can come naturally after years of practice. Poise however, is something that is innate. Ruma Chakraborty, born dancer and Rabindra Nritya exponent, has in her, the best of both worlds.

At three-and-a-half years of age, a toddler Ruma found herself on stage in front of an expectant audience. She pulled herself together and performed beautifully! She hadn’t let herself down then, and she continues to live up to her own standards even now. Her guiding philosophy, she says, is to always know your self worth. “If someone criticises you, it does not mean it defines you. It is your reaction to the criticism that will define you.”

Today, as you see her, Ruma is a woman of many passions - not just dance. Passions that tend to overflow into one another. Having nurtured a love for Rabindra Sangeet of late, she gets great pleasure dancing to its strains. She is also now a media professional associated with a major radio station.
