Nirupama Borgohain

Her Pen is her Power

The pen is mightier than the sword. Sahitya Akademi award, Nirupama Borgohain is a living example of that. And even though she has paid a price for her sharp words, she is in no mood to silence it.

Only the exceptional few win the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award. But even fewer return it! Nirupama Borgohain is one such awardee.

Renowned as one of India’s premier journalists and novelists, Nirupama’s actions have often revolved around one of three things - price, cost, and value. Treated as synonyms for each other, Nirupama has lived to learn the difference. She gave up her award as a statement against the rising intolerance in society, and the basic human ‘values’ she saw being cast aside. She knew the ‘cost’ of her decision - vicious threats from social factions, her intellectual capability called into question. And she was willing to pay this ‘price’ for her causes.

This wasn’t the only time Nirupama has been at the forefront when it comes to awakening of the conscience of the people. When Assam was facing an alleged influx of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, she invested the matter. This led her to realise that several camps of these alleged immigrants were being attacked by activists. The settlers were being harassed, made homeless, and in some cases, even killed to send out the message. Her findings resulted in a series of controversial essays which ultimately, got her sacked from the magazine she was working in.

But Nirupama doesn’t scare easy! It takes powerful writing sans any sugar-coating to get through to people. And with her words, Nirupama has been known to taste sweet victory!
