E Anjalai, a woman with grit and determination survived the onslaughts of life by silently working hard to bring up her 3 children alone. She is definitely a role model for other women in the vicinity proving that sheer hard work, sincerity, honesty and grit can help one to overcome obstacles in life.

E Anjalai, a woman with grit and determination survived the onslaughts of life by silently working hard to bring up her 3 children and fighting the odds. Her husband, G. Ezumalai, was a flower vendor with a meagre income which he spent on drinks. Hence, he could not survive for long and left for his heavenly abode, leaving Anjalai and her children to fend for themselves. The family lost whatever little income they had from the flower sales.

However, Anjalai did not lose heart. Even though she did not have prior experience in household work, she ventured into it after the death of her husband, to ensure that her two sons and daughter were brought up, as hard working like her, to make an honest living. The eldest, a boy, studied up to Std. 9. Thereafter, he could get employed as an attendant in a private school. To supplement the income of the family, he was inspired by his mother to clean cars in his spare time.

The second child, a girl, completed her B. A. (Economics) in Tamil medium. As per the custom prevailing in her family, the girl was married immediately on completion of her studies. As the marriage expenses were extremely high, they had to look out for a man of good character rather than a well educated boy. Thus, they ended up finding a hard working, honest man who took up painting assignments to earn his livelihood. Unfortunately, not being skillful at giving written quotations for contracts undertaken by him, he had to depend on others. Thus, the girl ended up with a man who was not sure of his income. They have two sons. The couple has to take care of their study expenses, medical expenses and the day to day expenses. Anjalai makes all out efforts to support her daughter’s family also.

The second son completed high school and thereafter got an ITE qualification. The family is trying to find a suitable match for him. He is working in Manipaco Pampers Company in Chennai as a salesman and is also delivering milk packets to families requiring his assistance.

Anjalai is proud that she could bring up her children to be hardworking and honest so that people look forward such people for help. Even though she is 52 years old, she still works in some houses as a domestic help and prepares flower garlands with her daughter, daughter-in-law and other members of the family to supplement her income. The best part is that she has not indulged in borrowing to meet her day-to-day or other expenses. She is definitely a role model for other women in the vicinity. Hats off to Anjalai and other members of her family for coming out of the woods at a difficult time through sheer hard work, sincerity, honesty and grit.
