Pooja Agarwal

Society Uplifter

This is the story of Dr. Pooja Agarwal, owner of Disha Dental Care at Mehndipatnam, Hyderabad, from past one year. Certainly a female dentist is not a special thing and may not be a trend breaker but being a female practicing dentistry with a clinic and employing female workforce with minimal external support physically, mentally and financially is certainly an exception.

Most of the dental clinics are run by male dentists or if females are, they are heavily supported by family members. It is really quite tough to sustain in the highly competitive and disorganized sector now-a-days with rising cost.

What makes my journey unique is being a middle-class Agarwal which is traditionally a business-driven community. My father himself is a businessman from a small town Mancherial, Telangana. I opted for advance education dentistry and aced with distinction from CKS. There are many classmates of mine who either dropped out in between or didn’t pursue dentistry as a career, either got married or changed the profession, so I had to overcome peer pressure.

Now-a-days, due to numerous number of dentists in the market, it is very difficult for a new dentist to sustain. I started practicing dentistry as an employee in various clinics like ‘Dental City’ etc. for almost 7 years and with the money saved and experience gained, I took the daring decision to open a clinic. It requires a lot of patience and perseverance to achieve at this point, as it is a well-known fact that dentists are not paid well in India and some time, they do not get the respect, which they deserve, from their counterparts.

During the clinic setup phase too, I had given preference to local venders to generate employment. I also preferred to hire female employees but due to lack of funds they do not last long and some of them used it as a launch pad to get better paid job. Still, females are given preference. I also call female specialists as a consultant for doing some of the advanced treatment. In the past year, I had given employment to both, educated and uneducated women. Apart from that, I am also an active member of Agarwal Samaj Attapur which is a local volunteer group of Agarwal for betterment of society. I also visit orphanages, regularly and donate daily essential like clothes, food, dental tool kits. I spend some quality time with the underprivileged and conduct dental health camps frequently to help impart dental health and hygiene into the society. With this, I am also taking care of my husband and little daughter. It gives me immense pleasure to uplift myself and women around me.
