Vasundhara Koppula

From Disability to Miss Ability

Vasundhara suffered from a severe polio attack that left her totally immobile and permanently dependant on others. However, she was determined to never let disability hampered her dreams. She started her own media firm called ‘Weave Media’ with an objective of empowering disabled persons with life skills and job skills.

Vasundhara Koppula was born in Settur Mandal, Anantapuram district, Andhra Pradesh to Ananda Rao and Prameela. Her parents got separated when she was a kid. Vasundhara suffered from a severe polio attack that left her totally immobile and permanently dependant on others. Since then, her mother and her younger brother became her two legs. At the age of 5 years, Vasundhara realized that she is a ‘disabled’ child when her mother took her to the doctor for a medical certificate for disability.

Academic Record:
Vasundhara studied at the KNR Government Girls High School, Anantapuram till the seventh standard. She continued her studies at Settur Government School till the 10th standard. She completed her intermediate course from St. Ann’s College. Her mother always advised her to get a government job, as it would make her economically independent.

Later, she completed B.Com and then a PG diploma in Journalism from SK University. Taking the advice of a lecturer, she joined the Sri Medha College, Guntur to pursue a C.A. course, which was literally unaffordable one at that time. The Rural Development Trust (RDT), an NGO based in Anantapuram, Tenali MLA Alapati Rajendraprasad and Cine Hero Muralimohan supported Vasundhara’s studies.

Professional Record:
Disability never hampered her from pursuing her dreams. She developed a special interest in literature, arts and culture. She always wanted to become a journalist. But the beaten idea in society is that it is very easy for a disabled person to get a job in government services. Vasundhara never believed in this conventional ideology. When she expressed her desire to join a media house, nobody encouraged her. Against all these odds she was so determined and continued to pursue her place in a media house.
After a year of unemployment she joined a local cable channel called Sri TV and never looked back. She worked at the TV channel for four years as a programme producer. But she had to quit her job at the TV channel as she wanted to start her own business in the field of media. Since there was no media house in the then united Andhra Pradesh state she wanted to create a conducive space for persons with disability to work in.

Entrepreneur Record:
Vasundhara started her own media firm called ‘Weave Media’ with an objective of capacitating disabled persons in life skills and job skills to pursue a career in the field of media, which was so far not seen in the field of Telugu media

Weave Media organized several events that facilitated the dreams of differently-abled persons who have immense talent. These events with a social cause included a successful IPL festival. In the 2014, Weave Media organized a mega event called VCCL (Visually Challenged Cricket League) with more than 120 visually challenged persons at the LB Stadium, Hyderabad.

Taking cue from the huge success of VCCL, Vasundhra is contemplating to organize a mega beauty contest called Miss Ability for disabled persons. Disability is no bar to seek a career in the fields of TV, cinema or modeling – is the sole motto of this upcoming event.
